California Air Tools SMART Controller
Consumer/light-commercial controller, not an industrial PLC. Behaviour and menu text follow the model-specific owner's manual (e.g. the published 20040SMAD manual) — confirm against your unit before changing setpoints.
- CAT 20040SM
- CAT 20040SMAD
- CAT 20040SPCAD
- CAT 20040DSMAD
- CAT 20040DSMADC
- Digital pressure display with programmable cut-in / cut-out instead of a mechanical switch
- Hour meter and service reminders per pump
- Automatic tank-drain timer output on AD models
- Alternates or stages the two pump heads to even out wear
- Auto restart after a power interruption (verify the setting before relying on it)
- Thermal protection interlock from the motor overloads
- Local keypad
- Automatic drain output (AD models)
- Motor contactor outputs (twin pump)
- Tank pressure (electronic)
- Pump / cabinet thermal protection
- Confirm 220 V single-phase at the disconnect and both legs at the board input
- Check the control fuse on the board
- Verify the E-stop / on-off switch continuity
- Reset the overload and compare its dial setting to the motor nameplate FLA
- Measure running amps on both heads and compare
- Check for a seized pump or a dragging cooling fan
- Clear the cabinet intake and exhaust louvres
- Verify the cooling fans spin freely
- Check duty cycle — continuous demand above the package rating will trip it
- Soap-test the whole discharge path for leaks
- Check both intake filters
- Inspect the check valves — a leaking check bleeds the tank back through a stopped pump
- Assess piston cup wear if the pump has passed roughly 3,000 hours
- Force a manual drain test from the panel
- Measure voltage at the drain solenoid during the commanded cycle
- Ohm the drain solenoid coil and clear the drain strainer
Fault list is non-exhaustive and firmware-dependent. Always confirm against the controller’s on-screen help or OEM manual.
Pin-level resistance and signal values for the sensor types this controller uses. Works offline. De-energise the panel and lift one lead before ohming any element.
- 220 V 60 Hz single-phase supply — both hot legs plus ground; there is no neutral requirement on standard builds
- Each pump motor runs through its own contactor and overload; the SMART board switches the contactor coils
- The automatic drain solenoid is a timed output — do not back-feed it from a separate timer
- Pressure is read electronically at the tank; there is no separate mechanical pressure switch to adjust on SMART models
- Setpoints revert to defaults if the board loses power during programming — re-verify cut-in/cut-out after any outage
- Auto-drain strainers plug quickly in humid shops; clean at every service
Setpoint and service menus are entered from the front keypad. There is no distributor-only PIN published for this class of controller — the owner's manual for the specific model documents the menu sequence.
Ultra Quiet / oil-free portables — owner's manuals include wiring, pressure-switch and drain settings
