California Air Tools Ultra Quiet & Oil-Free portable series

Oil-free, dual-piston, direct-drive portable compressors built around low noise. The whole range trades airflow for quiet operation and zero oil maintenance, which makes them the default choice for finish work indoors.

Specs & intervals below are from publicly published OEM literature and long-standing field practice. Torque values, exact revision-dated part numbers, and safety-critical settings vary by serial number — always cross-check the unit’s OEM manual and nameplate before ordering parts or performing service.

Fluid
Spec: None — oil-free dual-piston pump with PTFE-lined cylinders
Change interval: N/A (oil-free). The pump is a wear item, not a serviceable sump.

Never add oil. Pump life is quoted around 3,000 hours before rebuild/replace.

Wear parts
CategoryIntervalSource
Air intake filter elementEvery 200 hours or when visibly loaded
Piston cup / cylinder kit~3,000 hours (pump rebuild kit)
Check valveInspect annually; replace if the tank bleeds back
Pressure switch with unloaderReplace on failure — unloader must vent at cut-out
Tank drain valveDrain after every use; replace if it will not seal

Consumable part numbers change by revision and region — pull the current number from the OEM portal.

Preventive maintenance
After every use
  • Drain tank condensate fully
  • Release line pressure
  • Wipe the cooling fins clean
Monthly
  • Check the intake filter
  • Test the safety relief valve ring
  • Check for air leaks at fittings with soapy water
Annual / 200 hr
  • Replace the intake filter
  • Inspect the check valve for carbon and debris
  • Verify cut-in/cut-out on a known gauge
  • Inspect the cord and plug
Common faults & first checks
  • Motor hums and will not start — tank pressure above cut-in with a failed unloader on the pressure switch
  • Runs continuously and never reaches cut-out — worn piston cups or a leaking check valve
  • Thermal overload trip on long duty cycles — these are not continuous-duty pumps
  • Tank pressure bleeds off overnight — check valve or drain valve leaking
  • Loud rattle — loose shroud or a cracked fan on the motor
Controller(s)
Strengths
  • Genuinely quiet (56–70 dB) so they can run beside people
  • No oil to change or spill
  • Light enough to carry one-handed on the small frames
  • Cheap to own
Weaknesses
  • Low CFM — not for sanders, grinders or continuous spray
  • Limited duty cycle; the pump is a consumable
  • Oil-free pumps wear faster than cast-iron oil-lubed pumps
  • 120 V models are current-limited
Field notes

Spec figures are from the published California Air Tools product data sheets. Cut-in/cut-out and CFM vary by exact model suffix — confirm against the unit's own data plate.
