OL = open coil. 0–2 Ω = shorted turns (often from a cooked transformer). Ballpark only (±15%+); electronic wide-range coils (e.g. ABB AF) read misleading values — test those at rated voltage instead. Always measure coil-to-frame too: must be >1 MΩ.

Field notes
  • Discoloured T-terminal insulation with clean tips almost always means a loose lug, not a worn contactor.
  • On a 40 HP unit starting across-the-line, expect ~6× FLA inrush — the tips are rated for it, but repeated restarts within a minute are not.
  • Check the moving-armature air gap for compressor scale/dust; a gritty gap causes buzz that mimics low control voltage.
