OL = open coil. 0–2 Ω = shorted turns (often from a cooked transformer). Ballpark only (±15%+); electronic wide-range coils (e.g. ABB AF) read misleading values — test those at rated voltage instead. Always measure coil-to-frame too: must be >1 MΩ.

  • Check the utilization category printed on the side: AC-3 rating is for squirrel-cage motors; the same contactor in AC-4 (plugging/jogging) is only good for a fraction of the amps.
  • Pair with the correct LRD overload — the overload dial setting, not the contactor size, protects the motor.
