Coil data
Available coil voltages
24, 120, 208, 240, 277, 480, 600 VAC 60 Hz
Inrush VA
≈ 275 VA
Sealed (holding) VA
≈ 25 VA
Pickup voltage
≈ 85% of rated
Dropout voltage
≈ 40–70% of rated
Typical measured coil resistance (±15%, ballpark)
24 VAC≈ 2–6 Ω
120 VAC≈ 50–110 Ω
240 VAC≈ 200–450 Ω
480 VAC≈ 800–1,700 Ω

OL = open coil · near zero = shorted turns · coil-to-frame must read >1 MΩ.

Coil resistance checker

Pick the coil voltage, enter your meter reading across A1–A2 (coil disconnected), and compare it to the expected ballpark.

Ω
This model (24 VAC table value)2 Ω6 Ω
Generic mid-frame 24 VAC4 Ω9 Ω

OL = open coil. 0–2 Ω = shorted turns (often from a cooked transformer). Ballpark only (±15%+); electronic wide-range coils (e.g. ABB AF) read misleading values — test those at rated voltage instead. Always measure coil-to-frame too: must be >1 MΩ.

Terminals & accessories
Power/coil terminals: Line L1–L3 top, load T1–T3 bottom, box lug to 4 AWG
Auxiliary contacts: 1 NO standard; Class 9999 aux decks add NO/NC
Companion overload: Melting-alloy (Class 9065) or bimetal overload block with thermal units sized per table
Field notes
  • Field-replaceable contact kits are still available for 8502 Size 2 — often cheaper than a whole starter on an old panel.
  • Melting-alloy thermal units are chosen from the Square D table by motor FLA and service factor — do not reuse the old ones on a different motor.
  • Blowing dust off the magnet faces and checking for a cracked shading coil fixes most Size 2 buzz complaints.
