X-Series System Automation (X8I / X12I)

Sequencing alone typically recovers 5–15 % on multi-compressor plants by killing overlapped unloaded run time — measure before and after with the built-in trending.

Manufacturer
Ingersoll Rand
Display
7" color touchscreen (X8I: 8 machines, X12I: 12 machines).
Years produced
~2013 – present.
Power supply
100 – 240 VAC wall-mount enclosure, internal 24 VDC bus.
Ambient range
0 – 50 °C.
Protection rating
IP54 / NEMA 4 enclosure options.
Relay outputs
Per-compressor enable relays, common alarm, dryer bank enable.
Replaces
ISC (Integrated Sequencing Controller), AUTO/DUAL sequencers
Used on
  • Mixed IR fleets
  • Third-party compressors via volt-free / Modbus interface
Features
  • Pressure-band sequencing with equalized run hours
  • VSD-aware trim control — keeps one variable machine in its efficient window
  • Cascade / band / target-pressure control strategies
  • Energy reporting with kW and specific-power trending
Interfaces
  • Ethernet Modbus TCP
  • RS-485 Modbus RTU
  • Web dashboard
  • Email alarm notification
Sensor inputs
  • Up to 4 system pressure transducers
  • Flow meter (option)
  • Dew point (option)
  • Per-compressor status via Modbus or dry contacts
Fault code lookup
First checks
  • Unique Modbus address per machine
  • Termination at the two physical ends only
  • Baud/parity match at the machine controller
First checks
  • Loop-check 4–20 mA
  • Isolation valve on the sense line closed
  • Compare to a calibrated gauge
First checks
  • Check for machines in Local mode
  • Review any standing alarms on slaves
  • Verify no closed isolation valve on a running unit
First checks
  • Confirm master is actually controlling
  • Check the backup switch setpoint spread

Fault list is non-exhaustive and firmware-dependent. Always confirm against the controller’s on-screen help or OEM manual.

Sensor pin resistance & signal values

Pin-level resistance and signal values for the sensor types this controller uses. Works offline. De-energise the panel and lift one lead before ohming any element.

Wiring notes
  • Every machine must be switched to Remote/Sequenced mode at its own controller or the master cannot command it
  • Run the RS-485 trunk in its own conduit — sharing with starter wiring causes intermittent comm loss
  • Fit a hardwired backup pressure switch so a master failure cannot deadhead the plant
Known issues & field notes
  • Mixed-vintage Intellisys machines need an interface card to join the bus; older SG boards are contact-only

Two levels (operator / administrator) set at commissioning; no factory universal code.
