Operating principle

A pressure vessel stores compressed air between the compressor and demand. It buffers intermittent demand, reduces compressor short cycling, separates condensate, and dampens pulsation from reciprocating units.

Efficiency notes

A right-sized receiver cuts short cycling and lets VSD compressors run efficiently. Undersized = frequent motor starts; oversized = long pump-up but stable pressure.

Selection guidance

Size for the demand profile and compressor type. Provide buffer for rotary screw (anti short-cycle) and larger storage for reciprocating (pulsation + intermittent draw).

Common issues
  • Water/oil condensate accumulation → rust, reduced capacity
  • Drain failure → flooded tank, carryover
  • Relief valve weeping → scale, failed seat
  • Undersized tank → short cycling, motor overload
Maintenance
  • Drain daily (auto drain preferred)
  • Inspect externally for corrosion annually
  • Internal inspection per jurisdiction (UT/visual)
  • Test relief valve annually
  • Never weld/modify a coded vessel
Field tips
  • Size receiver ~1 gal per 1 CFM for reciprocating; 2–4 CFM buffer for rotary screw
  • Locate after the aftercooler so condensate drops in the tank
  • Automatic zero-loss drains save air vs timed dumps
  • Tank pressure rating must exceed compressor cut-out
