Implosion risk on glass or thin-wall vessels — inspect before pulling vacuum. Vacuum pump exhaust contains oil mist; ventilate or fit a mist eliminator.

Procedure
  1. 1
    Blank-off test the pump first

    Isolate the pump and pull down against a blank flange with an absolute gauge. A healthy rotary vane pump reaches its rated ultimate pressure (often 20–100 microns) within a few minutes. If it cannot, the problem is the pump, not the system.

    Change the oil if it fails blank-off

    Contaminated or water-loaded oil is the most common cause of poor ultimate vacuum. Run a gas ballast cycle for 30 min warm, change the oil, and retest before condemning the pump.

    Pull the system down

    Reconnect and evacuate the full system. Note how long it takes to reach the target — pump-down time versus a known baseline reveals a large leak immediately.

    Run rate-of-rise

    Isolate the pump at the target vacuum and time the pressure rise. A rise that continues linearly indicates a real leak; a rise that slows and plateaus indicates outgassing or trapped moisture, not a leak.

    Localize

    Spray isopropyl alcohol or use helium at each joint while watching the gauge. Any sudden pressure change at a joint marks the leak. Work from the largest, most accessible joints outward.

    Repair correctly

    Vacuum joints need vacuum-rated gaskets and clean sealing surfaces. Never use PTFE tape shreds on a vacuum joint — they migrate and create virtual leaks.

    Re-verify

    Repeat the rate-of-rise after repair and document the pass rate in microns per minute for the next tech to compare against.
