Hot fluid burns. Cool the package below 120°F before opening the thermal valve. Water-cooled units may hold city or tower water under pressure — isolate and drain both sides.

Procedure
  1. 1
    Map the temperatures

    With the machine hot and loaded, shoot the airend discharge, cooler inlet, cooler outlet, and injection line. A cooler with equal inlet and outlet temperature is being bypassed — that is a thermal valve fault, not a cooler fault.

    Rule out airflow first

    On air-cooled packages, a clogged core or a fan running backwards is the most common overheat cause. Verify fan rotation and check for a plugged enclosure filter before touching the valve.

    Pull the thermal element

    LOTO, cool down, drain to below the valve, and remove the element. Wax elements fail stuck-open (cold running, water in the sump) or stuck-closed (overheat). Test in hot water — the pin should stroke fully near the rated temperature.

    Clean the air-cooled core

    Blow out from the discharge side toward the inlet at low pressure. For oily buildup, apply a coil cleaner, dwell, then rinse with a fan tip at low pressure. Straighten bent fins with a comb — bent fins on a third of the face is worth several degrees.

    Flush the water-cooled core

    Isolate, drain, and circulate a descaling solution per the chemical's data sheet, then neutralize and flush. Verify water flow rate and ΔT — most shell-and-tube coolers want 10–20°F rise across the water side.

    Reassemble

    New element, new gaskets, refill fluid, replace the oil filter, and bleed air from the water side.

    Verify

    Run loaded for 30 min. Target discharge 175–200°F and at least 20°F above the pressure dewpoint at the sump to keep condensate out of the oil. Log the new numbers on the service tag.
