LOTO before removing any coupling guard. Never bar the rotors over with fingers inside the coupling. Heat-fitted hubs will burn — use gloves and a controlled induction heater, not a torch.

  • Precision shim stock (stainless, 0.002"–0.030")

Procedure
  1. 1
    Inspect and document

    Black rubber dust inside the guard means the element is shredding — usually from misalignment or a soft foot, not from age. Fix the cause or the new element fails the same way.

    LOTO and open the guard

    Lock out, verify absent voltage, and remove the coupling guard. Mark hub positions on both shafts before disturbing anything.

    Remove the element and hubs

    Pull the element. If hubs must come off, use a proper puller or controlled heat to 250–275°F max; never drive them off with a hammer — you will damage airend bearings.

    Check for soft foot

    With all bolts snug, loosen each motor foot one at a time and dial-indicate the movement. More than 0.002" of lift is a soft foot and must be shimmed out before alignment.

    Rough align

    Straight edge across the hub OD for offset and feelers around the gap for angularity. Get within 0.010" before touching the indicators.

    Precision align

    Use rim-and-face or reverse-dial. Typical target: ≤ 0.005" parallel offset and ≤ 0.002" per inch of coupling diameter angular. Correct vertical with shims first, then horizontal with jacking bolts.

    Set the gap

    Set the distance between hub faces (DBSE) to the coupling manufacturer's spec — usually stamped on the hub or in the manual. Too tight and the element cooks; too loose and it walks.

    Torque and re-check

    Torque motor feet to spec, then re-verify alignment — final torque routinely moves a machine 0.003–0.005".

    Run and confirm

    Reinstall the guard, run 30 min, then check coupling temperature (should not exceed ambient + 40°F) and re-verify alignment hot on machines that run above 150°F.
