Honing throws abrasive grit. Wear eye protection, and never run a hone in a bore you have not first checked for cracks. Every trace of grit must be scrubbed out with hot soapy water — solvent alone will not remove it and the residue destroys the new rings.

Procedure
  1. 1
    Measure before you cut

    Measure bore diameter at top, middle, and bottom, in two axes 90° apart. Taper over 0.005" or out-of-round over 0.003" means the pump needs boring/sleeving or replacement — honing will not save it.

    Deglaze, don't resize

    Flood with honing oil and stroke the hone at a rate that produces a 45–60° crosshatch. Ten to fifteen seconds is usually enough to break glaze. You are texturing for ring seating, not removing material.

    Clean obsessively

    Scrub the bore with a stiff nylon brush and hot soapy water until a clean white rag wipes through with no gray. Dry immediately and coat with oil to prevent flash rust.

    Check ring end gap

    Square each ring in the bore with a piston and measure the gap. Typical: 0.003–0.004" per inch of bore diameter. Too tight and the ring butts and scuffs when hot; file only the ends, square, and deburr.

    Verify side clearance

    Roll each ring in its groove with a feeler underneath. Typical 0.0015–0.003". Excess side clearance means the piston is worn — new rings will not fix it.

    Install rings

    Expander tool only. Oil ring first, then second, then top. Stagger gaps 120° apart and keep no gap over the wrist pin or over the thrust face.

    Assemble and torque

    Oil the bore and rings, compress, install the piston. Torque the rod cap in two passes to spec and confirm the crank spins free by hand with no tight spot.

    Seat the rings

    Fill with fresh oil, run unloaded 30 min, then in loaded cycles at increasing pressure over the next hour. Full seating takes 8–10 run hours — expect a little blow-by until then.
