Never weld, patch, or drill an ASME pressure vessel — repair requires an R-stamp holder or the vessel gets replaced. Corroded receivers have failed explosively. If wall loss is suspected, take the vessel out of service immediately.

Procedure
  1. 1
    Read the nameplate

    Record the ASME/National Board number, MAWP, and manufacture date. The relief valve setpoint must not exceed MAWP, and every downstream device must be rated for it.

    Inspect externally

    Walk the vessel looking for rust streaks at the bottom seam, pitting, dents, weld cracks, and corroded supports. Rust weeping from a seam takes the vessel out of service — not into a welding shop.

    Inspect internally

    Depressurize, remove the drain or inspection plug, and borescope the bottom of the shell. Standing water and scale at the low point is where every receiver fails.

    Test the relief valve

    Pull the test ring at operating pressure — it should lift and reseat cleanly with no seepage after. A weeping relief valve gets replaced, never adjusted, plugged, or re-seated with a hammer.

    Verify the gauge

    Compare against a calibrated reference. A gauge reading 10 psi low means the whole system runs 10 psi high — that is roughly 5% wasted energy.

    Fix the drain

    Install a full-port automatic drain at the true low point with an isolation valve and strainer. Manual daily draining is a program that always lapses.

    Check compliance

    Many jurisdictions require periodic inspection of air receivers over a certain size. Confirm your state or provincial boiler/pressure vessel rules and keep the certificate on file.

    Document

    Log inspection date, findings, relief test result, and gauge comparison on a tag attached to the vessel.
