The MPV sits directly downstream of the separator and holds full line pressure. Verify 0 psi at the sump gauge, not just the shop header — a stuck MPV can trap pressure in the sump after blowdown.

Procedure

    Confirm the symptom

    Low sump pressure at load (below ~60–65 psi) with low oil flow points to a weak MPV spring. Air blowing back through the airend at shutdown, or an inlet-valve chatter on stop, points to a leaking check function.

    LOTO and vent

    Lock out, let the machine blow down, then verify zero at the sump gauge. Crack the fill plug to prove atmosphere before opening the discharge.

    Remove the valve

    Support the discharge piping, unbolt the MPV, and note the flow-direction arrow. Some designs integrate the check into the separator tank lid — read the parts drawing before you pull it.

    Inspect poppet and seat

    Look for carbon buildup, a grooved elastomer seat, or a collapsed spring. Measure free spring length against the kit spec — a spring 10% short will not hold minimum pressure.

    Rebuild

    Replace the poppet seal, seat O-ring, and spring. Polish (do not machine) any light scoring on the metal seat. Lubricate seals with system fluid, never petroleum grease.

    Reinstall and torque

    New gasket, correct flow direction, torque flange bolts in a cross pattern to spec.

    Verify under load

    Start and load the machine. Sump pressure should reach minimum setpoint (typically 65 psi) within a few seconds and stay above it at full load. On shutdown, listen for backflow through the inlet — silence means the check is sealing.
