Unplug and fully bleed the tank before opening any electrical or pneumatic component. Capacitors hold a charge — discharge before probing. Consumer-grade Husky and HDX portables use single-phase motors with start/run capacitors; treat them accordingly.

Won't start / just hums

CauseFailed start capacitor (very common on Husky/HDX single-phase)
CheckWith power off and tank bled, discharge and read the run/start caps with a multimeter. A start cap that reads open, shorted, or well below its µF rating is bad.
FixReplace with an identical µF and voltage rating capacitor. Verify the pressure switch cut-in is not being held above tank pressure.

Trips breaker or overload on start

CauseTank pressure above cut-in with no unloader bleed
CheckBleed the tank fully. Listen for the pressure-switch unloader tube venting ~1–2 seconds after shutdown. No hiss = plugged or failed unloader.
FixClean or replace the unloader valve inside the pressure switch. Confirm the check valve is not stuck open (see below).

Won't build pressure / builds slowly

CauseLeaking check valve or blown reed valves
CheckWith the compressor off and tank charged, listen at the pressure-switch unloader tube. Continuous hiss = check valve leaking back. Slow build with no leaks = worn intake/discharge reeds.
FixReplace the check valve; if reeds are worn, rebuild the pump head with the correct valve plate kit.

Runs continuously, won't shut off

CausePressure switch stuck closed or set above tank rating
CheckConfirm actual tank pressure with a known-good gauge. Compare to the switch cut-out spec.
FixReplace the pressure switch. Never adjust cut-out above the tank's rated working pressure.

Oil in air line (oil-lube models)

CauseOverfilled crankcase or worn piston rings
CheckCheck oil level at the sight glass — should be at the center dot, not above. Inspect intake filter for oil wetness.
FixDrain to correct level. If rings are worn, rebuild or replace the pump.
