Filter bowls store energy. Isolate and vent to 0 psi before unscrewing — a bowl released under pressure becomes a projectile.

  • Filter bowl wrench (OEM-specific)
  • Differential pressure gauge or two calibrated gauges
  • O-ring pick
  • Silicone-free O-ring lubricant compatible with compressor fluid

  • Element set matched to housing (general purpose, coalescing, and carbon as applicable)
  • Bowl O-rings and drain seals
  • New auto-drain if the existing one is unserviceable
Procedure
  1. 1
    Read ΔP at real flow

    Filter ΔP means nothing at no-flow. Take the reading at typical plant demand. Replace a coalescing element at 5 psi ΔP or 12 months, whichever comes first — element cost is trivial compared to the energy penalty.

    Confirm the filter order

    Correct sequence is particulate → coalescing → dryer → carbon (if required). A carbon element upstream of a coalescer becomes an expensive oil sponge and dumps carbon fines downstream.

    Isolate and vent

    Close upstream and downstream valves, open the manual drain, and confirm the housing gauge reads zero before turning the bowl.

    Change the element

    Note the flow direction (inside-out for coalescing, outside-in for particulate). Do not squeeze or handle the coalescing media — fingerprints crush the fibers.

    Service seals and drain

    Replace the bowl O-ring every element change and clean or replace the automatic drain. A leaking bowl O-ring is a 24/7 air leak.

    Reset the ΔP indicator

    Zero or replace the differential indicator so the next tech reads real data, and write the date on the housing.

    Verify downstream quality

    For critical applications, verify with an oil-vapor indicator tube or particle count against the ISO 8573-1 class the process requires.
