Aftercooler & moisture separator service
Clean the aftercooler core and service the moisture separator to knock out the majority of water before it ever reaches the dryer.

Aftercooler surfaces are hot enough to burn immediately after shutdown. Allow full cool-down and verify zero pressure before opening the separator.
- Fin comb, soft brush, low-pressure air
- Coil cleaner appropriate for aluminum fins

- 1Measure approach temperature
A healthy air-cooled aftercooler delivers air within 15–20°F of ambient. Water-cooled should be within 10–15°F of the water inlet. A high approach means a fouled core.
- 2Clean the core
Blow out from the clean side backwards, then apply coil cleaner for oily fouling, dwell, and rinse gently. Straighten fins with a comb.
- 3Verify airflow
Confirm fan rotation and free discharge. Recirculating hot discharge air back to the inlet is a common cause of high approach in tight compressor rooms.
- 4Service the separator
Open the housing, remove and inspect the demister pad or centrifugal element for collapse and oil loading. Replace the gasket every time.
- 5Test the drain
An aftercooler separator with a failed drain sends slugs of liquid water straight into the dryer and kills its dewpoint. Confirm the drain expels liquid on every cycle.
- 6Confirm the result
After service, air entering the dryer should be below 100°F. Every 20°F you remove ahead of the dryer roughly halves the moisture load it has to handle.
