A rapid knocking/rattling at the check valve while the pump runs is the disc slamming open and shut on every compression stroke. It wears the seat quickly and can loosen fittings.
1
Pulsating flow from single-cylinder pump with valve too close to pump
lowReciprocating
CheckValve within a short distance of the pump head with no volume between. Chatter is loudest on single-stage, single-cylinder units.
FixUse a longer or larger-volume discharge line, or a check valve designed for reciprocating service (heavier spring/dampened poppet).

2
Oversized check valve for the flow
lowCheckValve size larger than the discharge port — disc never fully opens and flutters.
FixMatch valve size to pump discharge and CFM; don't upsize 'for flow'.

3
Worn disc/seat or broken spring
medCheckRemove and inspect: worn guides let the poppet rattle side to side.
FixReplace valve.
