Take-up values are typical for hand benders (≤1-1/4") and one-shot/mechanical shoes above that. Always confirm against the deduct stamped on your bender.
How to use this calculator
Work out bend marks, shrink and take-up for EMT, IMC, rigid, PVC and copper by trade size.
- Pick the material and trade size of the conduit or pipe.
- Choose the bend type: offset, 3- or 4-point saddle, stub-up, back-to-back or rolling offset.
- Enter the offset depth or stub height and the distance to the obstacle.
- Transfer the marks to the pipe and line them up with the bender arrow.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the multiplier for a 30 degree offset?
- 2. Multiply the offset depth by 2 to get the distance between bends; shrink is 1/4 in per inch of offset.
- How far apart are the bends on a 3-point saddle?
- Make a 45° center bend and two 22.5° outer bends, each 2.5 times the obstacle height from the center mark. Shrink is 3/16 in per inch of height.
- What is the take-up on 1/2 inch EMT?
- 5 in on a standard hand bender (3/4 in EMT is 6 in, 1 in EMT is 8 in). Subtract it from the stub height to get your mark.
